Eid al-Pandemic

Cleanse my body.
Brush my hair.
Dress my baby.
Say a prayer.

Scent of henna,
In a quiet house.
Golden threads to impress no one.
Say a prayer

A pretense of dressing up a tree,
To make up for warm embraces
and sweet kisses on cheeks.
Say a prayer.

Filo dough and Clorox sold out
But there’s nuts in abundance. Everywhere.
Culture wars over wearing a mask.
Need privilege now to go out for a jog.
A ‘badge of honor’ measured in coffins.
Say a prayer.

My prayer,
That we hear and speak the truth.
That we embrace soon.
That our children play together.
That our hearts are warmed through each other’s presence.

But my most earnest prayer,
is for us to remember
that we belong to each other.
